Sigüenza
We will explore the Casa del Doncel, the winding streets of Las Travesañas, the exterior of the Castle-Parador
After hotel pickup at 8:30 am, we will head to the medieval city of Sigüenza. This exclusive itinerary is designed to offer an authentic cultural and gastronomic immersion for those seeking a unique experience in the heart of Castilla.
Upon arrival in Sigüenza around 10:00 am, our guide will accompany us on a private tour of the city’s most emblematic corners. During the morning, we will explore the Casa del Doncel, the winding streets of Las Travesañas, the exterior of the Castle-Parador, and some lesser-known gems of the historic center, all tailored to our pace and interests.
Our visit will end in the Plaza Mayor at the entrance of the Cathedral, where we will enjoy a final panoramic view before continuing to the next stage of the day.
At 12:45 pm, we will transfer in our private vehicle to the exclusive Monte de Cutamilla estate, a protected natural environment just minutes from Sigüenza. There, a specially organized gastronomic activity awaits us: an introduction to the flavors of the land via a showcooking or guided tasting. The experience will conclude with a relaxed lunch prepared using carefully selected local products.
Our return to Madrid is scheduled for 3:30 pm, after an unforgettable day rich in culture, nature, and gastronomy.

Curiosities
- The castle that’s also a hotel: Sigüenza’s 12th-century castle has served as a residence for warrior bishops, prison, and barracks. Today, it operates as the city’s National Parador, one of Spain’s most iconic hotels where you can literally sleep inside a medieval fortress.
- Spain’s smallest (and shortest-lived) university: Founded in 1489 by the Catholic Monarchs, Sigüenza’s university operated until 1824 and was known as the “miniature university” due to its small number of students. Nonetheless, it was home to great humanists and theologians.
- The mystery of the Doncel: The famous tomb of Martín Vázquez de Arce in the Cathedral depicts him reading a book—unusual for medieval funerary sculpture. It is one of the few examples of a knight portrayed in an intellectual pose, symbolizing the Renaissance ideal of the warrior-scholar.
- Hidden legends beneath its streets: Secret underground passages are said to connect the castle with the cathedral and noble houses, allowing escape during sieges or ecclesiastical conspiracies.
- Medieval film set: Thanks to its perfect state of preservation—cobbled streets, walls, and buildings with minimal modern alterations—Sigüenza has been film backdrop for period films and series directed by the likes of Ridley Scott and John Glen.
