San Sebastián, Flysch and Getaria

An exclusive experience to discover the Basque coast from its most emblematic viewpoints to its most authentic villages

We will pick you up at your hotel in San Sebastián at 9:00 am to begin a day that combines city, nature and seafaring tradition.

The morning will start with a panoramic tour of San Sebastián’s most iconic viewpoints, offering a complete view of the bay and the city. On Mount Igueldo, we will enjoy the most famous postcard view of La Concha, while at the Peine del Viento, a work by Eduardo Chillida, art merges with the power of the Cantabrian Sea.

Next, we will head to Zumaia for an approximately one-hour walk along the flysch cliffs, a unique landscape declared a UNESCO Geopark. This walking tour allows you to see up close the impressive rock formations that tell more than 60 million years of geological history and enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

After the walk, we will head to Getaria, where we will first stop at the top of the hill, next to the txakolí vineyards, to enjoy unparalleled views of the coast. From here, we will descend to the village, birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, with its medieval streets and traditional fishing port.

In Getaria, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant specialising in fresh grilled fish, accompanied by the region’s characteristic txakolí wine. The seaside atmosphere and authenticity of the place make this meal an unforgettable experience.

The return to San Sebastián is scheduled for around 4 pm, after a day combining urban panoramas, a walk through one of the most unique landscapes in Europe and the seafaring essence of Getaria.

Curiosities

  • La Concha Bay has often been considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. At the end of the 19th century, it became a fashionable destination when Queen Regent María Cristina of Habsburg established her summer residence there, attracting the European aristocracy.
  • El Peine del Viento (The Wind Comb), a masterpiece by Eduardo Chillida, was installed in 1977 and symbolises the eternal dialogue between art and the sea. Its three steel sculptures, anchored in the rocks, weigh more than 10 tonnes each and have withstood the battering of the Cantabrian Sea for decades.
  • The flysch cliffs of Zumaia form a unique landscape declared a UNESCO Geopark. Their spectacular rock layers tell more than 60 million years of geological history, including the impact of the meteorite that marked the extinction of the dinosaurs.
  • Getaria is the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the sailor who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522 after Magellan’s expedition. A statue at the top of the harbour commemorates his feat.
  • Getaria’s famous txakolí white wine is grown in terraced vineyards facing the sea. Its freshness and slight acidity make it the perfect accompaniment to grilled fish, the port’s great gastronomic speciality.
  • In addition to its seafaring tradition, Getaria is also the birthplace of designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, considered ‘the master of all couturiers’. His international legacy is honoured in a museum that bears his name in the village.
