A day that combines the authenticity of the Pueblos Blancos, the monumentality of Ronda and the unforgettable landscapes of the Sierra de Grazalema

We will pick you up at your hotel in Seville at 8:00 am to embark on an unforgettable journey to the Serranía de Ronda, where landscapes of countryside, olive groves and rugged mountains will accompany us along the way. The day begins in Setenil de las Bodegas, one of the most unique villages in Spain, famous for its houses carved directly into the rock. Its streets, with evocative names such as ‘Cueva del Sol’ (Cave of the Sun) and ‘Cueva de la Sombra’ (Cave of the Shadow), create a unique setting that combines tradition and architectural wonder. Here we will enjoy a leisurely stroll through its streets, discovering how everyday life adapts to such a surprising natural environment.

The route continues to Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most monumental cities and an undisputed symbol of mountain villages. Perched atop a gorge over 100 metres deep, Ronda is famous for the Puente Nuevo, an 18th-century engineering masterpiece that connects the two halves of the city with spectacular views of the riverTajo del Guadalevín. We will stroll through its historic centre, full of palaces, Arab walls and medieval baths, and visit the emblematic Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza, one of the oldest and most monumental bullrings in the country, linked to the Romero family and the origins of modern bullfighting.

At midday, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Ronda, carefully selected to avoid the tourist circuits. There we will sample traditional Andalusian cuisine, made with products from the mountains, artisan cheeses and wines with the Serranía de Ronda Designation of Origin, in an authentic and peaceful setting.

In the afternoon, we will head to Zahara de la Sierra, one of the most picturesque and characterful of the Pueblos Blancos in Andalusia. Its whitewashed houses spread across the hillside crowned by a 13th-century Moorish castle, from where you can enjoy unforgettable views of the turquoise reservoir and the Sierra de Grazalema, one of the most beautiful natural parks in Spain. We will stroll through its narrow, steep streets, adorned with flowers and balconies, enjoying the calm of a village that has preserved its Andalusian essence intact.

The return to Seville is scheduled for around 6 pm, after a day that combines the authenticity of the Pueblos Blancos, the monumentality of Ronda and the unforgettable landscapes of the Sierra de Grazalema.

Curiosities

  • Setenil de las Bodegas is unique among the so called Pueblos Blancos (white villages) instead of being built on the rock, it was carved out of it. Its streets, called Cueva del Sol (Sun Cave) and Cueva de la Sombra (Shadow Cave), show how the residents used the mountain as part of their homes, keeping the interior cool even in summer.
  • The city of Ronda is divided by the Guadalevín River gorge, which is over 100 metres deep. The Puente Nuevo bridge, built in the 18th century, took over 40 years to construct and is now one of the most photographed monuments in Andalusia.
  • The Ronda Bullring, inaugurated in 1785, is one of the oldest and most monumental in Spain. It is known as the cradle of modern bullfighting, linked to the Romero family and especial to Pedro Romero, considered the first classical bullfighter.
  • The historic centre of Ronda preserves palaces, Arab baths and walls that recall the importance of the city during Muslim rule, when it was the capital of a small Taifa kingdom.
  • The Sierra de Grazalema is the rainiest place in Spain, despite being located in Andalusia. Thanks to its special climate conditions, it is home to a unique ecosystem with the Spanish fir, a relict species from the Ice Age.
  • Zahara de la Sierra, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, was a strategic Muslim fortress. Its whitewashed houses climb up the hillside to the 13th-century Arab castle, from where there are spectacular views of the reservoir and the mountains.
  • The Pueblos Blancos (white villages) owe their characteristic colour to the tradition of whitewashing the façades, a practice that, in addition to being aesthetic, served to cool down the houses and disinfect them during the hot Andalusian summers.)
