La Ribeira Sacra
Land of wine and monasteries
The Ribeira Sacra has the highest concentration of Romanesque monasteries in Europe, especially along the banks of the Miño and Sil rivers. Many of these temples were built between the 10th and 13th centuries, when the area became a spiritual centre of enormous importance thanks to the presence of Benedictine and Cistercian communities.
The vineyards in the area are known as an example of heroic viticulture, a term that describes cultivation on extreme slopes where harvesting can only be done by hand. Some terraces reach inclines of more than 70%, making each harvest a real challenge.
Sailing along the Miño and Sil rivers reveals the spectacular river canyons, formed over millions of years. The most famous is Cabo do Mundo, an almost circular meander of the Miño River that offers one of the most iconic views in Galicia.
The wines of the Ribeira Sacra, made mainly from the Mencía grape, are the heirs to a winemaking tradition that was already practised by the Romans. In fact, ancient wine presses carved into the rock have been found along the canyons, proof that viticulture here has more than 2,000 years of history.
The combination of rivers, monasteries and vineyards makes Ribeira Sacra a unique region in Europe. In 2021, it was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, a title that seeks to highlight both its natural wealth and cultural heritage.
