La Granja & Pedraza

From the Court to a Medieval Village

After picking you up comfortably at your hotel, we will head towards the Royal Site of La Granja de San Ildefonso, declared a Historic Monumental Site, and one of the best examples of the monarchic splendour of the 18th century.

On arrival we will visit the majestic Royal Palace, former summer residence of the Borbons, where art, history and architecture are elegantly intertwined. We will also visit its impressive gardens, inspired by Versailles, dotted with monumental fountains that still surprise us with their beauty and design.

Next, we will head to the Abbatte textile workshop, located in the evocative Monastery of Santa María de la Sierra, a building in ruins with an incomparable charm. In this unique setting, we will enjoy a private visit where we will learn about the artisanal process of weaving and natural dyes, in a space that combines history, creativity and sustainability. We will finish with a Castilian aperitif between centenary walls and peaceful nature.

We will continue our journey to Pedraza, one of the best preserved medieval villages in Spain, where we will have free time for a leisurely lunch.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore the village’s cobblestone streets, discover its arcaded main square, the old prison, and hidden corners that have preserved the essence of the Middle Ages. Pedraza’s quiet atmosphere and heritage charm make this visit a true immersion into the living history of Castile.

We plan to return to Madrid around 4:00 PM.

Curiosities

  • La Granja de San Ildefonso is home to a royal glass factory over 300 years old:
The Royal Glass Factory, founded in the 18th century, is still in operation and includes a fascinating museum with live glassblowing demonstrations.
  • The palace and gardens of La Granja were directly inspired by Versailles, but King Felipe V made them even more ambitious in hydraulic terms: the fountains operate solely through natural pressure, thanks to an ingenious 18th-century system of reservoirs and channels.
  • Pedraza was declared a Historic Site in 1951, making it one of the first towns in Spain to receive such distinction. Its urban layout and architecture have remained virtually untouched for centuries.
  • Due to its exceptional preservation, Pedraza has been the setting for many films, series and advertisements. Its porticoed square, considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, is in great demand for filming.
  • Pedraza is famous for its Candlelight Concerts, held on magical July nights when all electric lighting is turned off and the village is illuminated solely by thousands of candles. The main square becomes a stage for classical music in an unforgettable setting.
