La Coruña, Costa da Morte and Finisterre

We will pick you up at your hotel in Santiago at 9:00 am to begin an exclusive tour of the Atlantic north of Galicia.

Our first stop will be in La Coruña, a city open to the sea with a charming historic centre. We will stroll through its Old Town, with cobbled streets, monumental squares such as María Pita and typical Galician arcades. We will also see the seafront with its famous glass galleries, which have given the city the nickname ‘the glass city’. The tour will culminate at the Tower of Hercules, the oldest functioning Roman lighthouse in the world and a World Heritage Site, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic coast.

At midday, we will enjoy lunch at a coastal restaurant overlooking the ocean, where Galician cuisine is expressed through fresh fish and seafood prepared on the grill, in a relaxed atmosphere facing the sea.

After lunch, we will head to Malpica, a fishing village that preserves all the authenticity of the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death). We will stroll through its harbour and climb up to the Sanctuary of San Adrián, located in a privileged spot overlooking the Sisargas Islands, from where you can appreciate the power of the Atlantic and the life linked to the sea.

We will continue on to Muxía, famous for the Sanctuary of the Virgen da Barca, surrounded by seafaring traditions and legends. Its sacred rocks and the temple facing the ocean convey the spirituality of this rugged and magical coastline.

The final stop will be Finisterre, a mythical place for Romans and pilgrims alike. For the former, it was literally “the end of the known world”; for the latter, it was the symbolic end of the Camino de Santiago, where, after reaching the tomb of the Apostle, many walked to this lighthouse to contemplate the infinite ocean. We will stroll around the lighthouse and its viewpoints, enjoying the grandeur of the Atlantic in a setting steeped in history, spirituality and legend.

We will return to Santiago in the late afternoon, after a day combining urban history, seafaring tradition, spirituality and unforgettable landscapes on the Costa da Morte.

Curiosities

  • The Tower of Hercules in La Coruña is the oldest Roman lighthouse still in operation in the world (1st century AD). According to legend, Hercules defeated the giant Geryon here and buried his head under the tower. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The city is known as the cradle of Zara and the Inditex group, the world’s largest textile empire, founded by Amancio Ortega in Arteixo (a few kilometres from A Coruña). This international connection is particularly surprising to foreign visitors.
  • In Malpica, opposite the Sanctuary of San Adrián, you can see the Sisargas Islands, which were a refuge for pirates and privateers for centuries. Today they are uninhabited, except for a lighthouse that guides ships along this rugged coastline.
  • The sanctuary of the Virgen da Barca in Muxía is surrounded by myths. One of the legends tells that the Virgin arrived in a stone boat to encourage the Apostle Santiago. The surrounding rocks are said to be the remains of that miraculous vessel.
  • The Costa da Morte owes its name to the countless shipwrecks that took place in these waters, famous for their ferocity. Even the English warship Serpent was wrecked here in 1890, with more than 170 sailors lost.
  • In Roman times, Finisterre was considered the “end of the world”. Today, it is the symbolic end of the Camino de Santiago, where pilgrims finish their journey facing the ocean. The New York Times has described this coastline as one of the most impressive in Europe due to its blend of spirituality, history and wild landscapes.
