Cuenca

It is a beautiful medieval gem

Cuenca is a beautiful medieval gem and a UNESCO World Heritage city that embraces contrasts: centuries-old architecture alongside abstract art, cobbled streets, and a vibrant energy growing every day, at just two hour drive from Madrid. On the way to Cuenca, we’ll make a brief stop at the Monastery of Uclés, known as “The Escorial of La Mancha,” a stunning blend of Renaissance, Herrerian, and Baroque styles, featuring an impressive Plateresque façade and cloister.

Once in Cuenca, our expert guide will lead us through the city’s history and charrm, built between two gorges. We’ll begin exploring old town, where the famous and iconic symbol of Cuenca, the Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) greet us perched on the edge of a cliff.

We will make a stop at the Spanish Abstract Art Museum, housed in one of these Hanging Houses, where contemporary art dialogues with ancient stone in a truly unique setting.

We will then walk through the vibrant and colorful Plaza Mayor, presided over by the majestic Cathedral of Santa María and San Julián, one of Spain’s earliest Gothic cathedrals, whose history is as fascinating as its architecture. Our visit will also include crossing the San Pablo Bridge, an iron walkway suspended over the Huécar Gorge, linking San Pablo Convent with old town and offering one of the most spectacular views of Cuenca.

We will finish our tour with some free time to enjoy the local culinary delights like morteruelo, ajoarriero, or alajú before returning to Madrid.

Curiosities

  • During Franco’s regime, Cuenca became an intellectual and artistic refuge, with artists such as Zóbel, Torner and Chillida promoting abstract art from the Hanging Houses. The first director of the MoMA in New York after his visit to Cuenca described it as ‘the most beautiful small museum in the world’.
  • Under Cuenca’s old town lie underground galleries and passages that once connected religious buildings and noble houses — some served as shelter during Spanish Civil War.
  • Cuenca has a street that is considered the narrowest in Spain. It is called “Callejón de la Moneda” and is located in the heart of the old town.
  • Under the Cathedral of Cuenca there is a burial crypt where you can see tombs, skeletal remains and symbols of the Order of Santiago. It is one of the most mysterious areas of the temple.
