Córdoba

An exclusive day discovering the history, art and beauty of one of the most captivating cities in Andalusia

We will pick you up at your hotel in Seville at 9:00 am and head to Córdoba, a World Heritage Site that was the capital of the Caliphate and one of the great cultural centres of medieval Europe.

The tour will begin with the Mosque-Cathedral, an architectural gem that is unique in the world. Its two-coloured horseshoe arches, its forest of columns and the contrast between its Islamic heritage and Renaissance choir make it an essential place to visit, summarising centuries of history and coexistence.

From there, we will enter the Jewish Quarter, a network of narrow streets, flower-filled courtyards and whitewashed balconies. This medieval quarter is home to the 14th-century synagogue, one of the few surviving in Spain and a testament to the Jewish influence in the city.

We will continue with a visit to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, a medieval fortress that was a royal residence and a key location in Spanish history, where the Catholic Monarchs planned the conquest of Granada. Its gardens, with fountains, ponds and orange trees, are an oasis of serenity and beauty.

At midday, you will have the option of enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, featuring the best of Cordoba cuisine: salmorejo, flamenquín, rabo de toro (oxtail) or aubergines with honey, paired with wines from Montilla-Moriles.

In the afternoon, we will take a walk across the Roman Bridge over the Guadalquivir River, with views of the Calahorra Tower and the city’s monumental skyline. Weather permitting, we will visit one of Cordoba’s famous patios, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, authentic gardens hidden in the heart of the houses.

The return to Seville is scheduled at around 6 pm, after an exclusive day discovering the history, art and beauty of one of the most captivating cities in Andalusia.

Curiosities

  • Córdoba is the only city in the world with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Mosque-Cathedral, the historic quarter, the Caliphate city of Medina Azahara and the Festival of the Patios.
  • The Mosque-Cathedral, begun in 785 by Abd-ar-Rahman I, once had more than 1,300 columns. Its transformation into a cathedral in 1236 gave rise to a unique monument that combines Islamic and Christian elements.
  • The mihrab of the Mosque, decorated with Byzantine mosaics, faces south instead of Mecca, an enigma that still baffles historians.
  • The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos was a royal residence and the place where Christopher Columbus requested support from the Catholic Monarchs before his first voyage to America.
  • The 14th-century Synagogue of Córdoba is one of only three medieval synagogues preserved in Spain, along with those in Toledo.
  • The famous patios of Córdoba, created to cool the houses during the summer, are now Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and every May they fill the city with colour and aromas in a unique festival.
  • In the 10th century, Córdoba was the most populous, modern and advanced city in Europe, with public lighting, baths, libraries and hospitals that no other European capital had at that time.
