Bilbao and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

A day that combines culture, history and nature in a unique tour

We will pick you up at your hotel in San Sebastián at 9:00 am and set off for Biscay on a tour that combines art, history and nature in a single day.

Our first stop will be in Bilbao, a vibrant city that in just a few decades has gone from being an industrial port to becoming an international benchmark for architecture and urban design. Here we will discover the Guggenheim Museum, Frank Gehry’s masterpiece and symbol of the city’s transformation. Its curved titanium forms, which reflect the light of the Nervión River, house one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Europe. In front of the museum, sculptures such as Puppy, Jeff Koons’ enormous floral puppy, and Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider surprise visitors and have become icons of Bilbao.

After the cultural visit, we will stroll through the Old Town, the historic heart of the city, known as the seven streets. Among its squares, churches and arcades, you can breathe in the medieval essence of the town, now full of pintxo bars and traditional shops. We will also see the Ensanche area, with its wide avenues and elegant buildings, reflecting modern and cosmopolitan Bilbao.

At midday, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, where we can sample the renowned basque cuisine.

In the afternoon, we will head to the coast to visit one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Basque Country: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. This rocky islet, crowned by a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and a staircase with 241 steps. Those who wish to climb up to the chapel can follow the tradition of ringing its bell three times to bring good luck. For those who prefer not to make the full walk, the viewpoints offer equally unforgettable views of the Cantabrian Sea and the silhouette of Gaztelugatxe, which has become an icon after appearing as a setting in the series Game of Thrones.

The return to San Sebastián is scheduled for around 6.30 pm, after a day combining the cultural modernity of Bilbao and the wild power of the Biscayan coast.

Curiosities

  • The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, opened in 1997, transformed the image of the city and gave rise to the so-called Guggenheim effect: art and architecture as a driving force for urban regeneration and international attraction.
  • Opposite the museum is the floral sculpture Puppy, a huge puppy covered with more than 40,000 live flowers, the work of Jeff Koons, which has become one of the most photographed symbols of Bilbao.
  • Bilbao’s Old Town is known as the Seven Streets (Zazpi Kaleak in Basque). The town was founded there in the 14th century and still retains its medieval layout, full of pintxo bars and traditional shops.
  • San Juan de Gaztelugatxe literally means ‘rock castle’ in Basque. The islet is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and 241 steps leading up to the chapel, where tradition invites visitors to ring the bell three times to bring good luck.
  • Gaztelugatxe was the setting for the series Game of Thrones, where it became the fortress of Dragonstone. Since then, it has established itself as one of the most visited places in the Basque Country.
  • The chapel of San Juan has a strong spiritual component: sailors and travellers used to go there to ask for protection before venturing into the Cantabrian Sea, which is always rough.
