Bilbao

The vibrant heart of the North

Architecture, tradition and innovation in the Basque Country’s great capital

Art, industry and everyday life coexist in effortless harmony

Bilbao is a city that captivates from the very first moment. Nestled in a green valley and crossed by the estuary of River Nervión, it has managed to reinvent itself without losing its soul. Its bridges, museums, pedestrian streets and historic neighbourhoods create an urban landscape where the classical and the contemporary blend seamlessly. Art, industry and everyday life coexist in effortless harmony.

Its beating heart lies in the Old Town, where history lingers in every street. Churches, squares, traditional shops and lively pintxo bars form a vibrant setting full of character. Yet modernity is never far away: Norman Foster’s sleek metro system, the eco-friendly tram, and libraries overlooking the river, Bilbao is a city designed with both residents and visitors in mind.

Culture plays a central role. The Guggenheim Museum is its international icon, but it is not the only one: the Fine Arts Museum, Azkuna Zentroa and the city’s theatres offer a diverse and dynamic cultural agenda. Contemporary architecture coexist with restored industrial heritage, creating unique spaces to live and enjoy. Bilbao is a city that never stops creating, showcasing and sharing.

And of course, there is the gastronomy. From local bars to award-winning restaurants, eating in Bilbao is like stepping into a living culinary tradition. Local produce, maritime influences and the creativity of its chefs turn every meal into something special. And if you decide to explore the surrounding area, the estuary takes you Portugalete and Getxo, or into natural landscapes that complete the experience. Bilbao is a city of culture, flavour and constant movement.
